Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, participants shall:
- Have knowledge about core epidemiological and statistical methods.
- Have insight into qualitative and mixed approaches
- Have an understanding of epidemiological study designs such as cross-sectional, cohort, case-control and ecological studies, randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews
- Understand the concepts of risk, confounding and bias and approaches to deal with these issues
- Understand how epidemiological methods can be applied for screening, surveillance, evaluation of diagnostics and outbreak investigations
- Have an understanding of the relation between epidemiology, demography, social science, health economics and health care management
Skills and abilities
On completion of the course, the student should:
- Have basic epidemiological and statistical skills for planning, conducting and reporting field studies to assess health problems and service delivery
- Demonstrate an ability to use statistical software for data entry, data checking and analysis.
Focus is on tropical diseases and tropical contexts.
